Certain versions of Windows allow you to encrypt files and folders such as XP Professional, Vista Ultimate, and Business to name a few. But who needs Windows when there’s a free open source program that will allow you to encrypt and password protect your folders and files.
TrueCrypt (download link at the bottom) is the best free way to encrypt your data. Here’s how it basically works, create a volume with TrueCrypt. The volume acts like a folder, and with this volume I can put folders, and files into it and it automatically encrypts everything inside this magical space. When you want to open the volume you open up TrueCrypt then pick a virtual drive to mount it and enter the password to open up the encrypted volume.
