With the lowest calling rate of 12 cents a minute nationwide anytime any day, in addition with 4 years long validity period, I’m sold with the idea. It’s also a bonus that the local charges are based on 30-second blocks. Currently, my Hotlink Plan can only give the best rate of 33 cents a minute. Even when I make a 5 seconds call, I would still be charged a minute worth of call since the charging block is 60 seconds.

So you can imagine the joy on my face when I found out about this. Excitedly, I began crawling the Hotlink website to look for more info. First and foremost, this is meant for students with valid Student ID from local tertiary institution. Since I’m currently a student with valid Student ID, I’m indeed still qualified to subscribe to this mobile prepaid service.
According to the terms and conditions, each student may have up to two Hotlink Youth Club lines. Maxis reserves the right to switch your Hotlink Youth Club line to a normal Hotlink Plan if more than two lines are registered under one name and IC number. Each line is valid for 4 years effective from the day of joining this new plan. You will need to perform a minimum top up of RM10 every year to retain this privilege, else Maxis again has the right to migrate the subscriber to the normal Hotlink Plan.
To register with the Hotlink Youth Club, you are required to visit participating dealer outlets near your campus vicinity. Next, you need to make photocopy of your Mykad together with Student ID on a single page. Then, show your Student ID and submit the photocopy to the participating dealer before you are allowed to buy the new Hotlink Youth Club SIM pack.

Hotlink Youth Club new SIM pack
Since I’m already a Hotlink subscriber for ages, I wanted to know if I could just migrate to the new plan without buying a new SIM pack. Unfortunately, the dealer told me that I had just miss the dateline to convert from old number for free.
My option was just to subscribe to a new line. I was not comfortable with that idea. My complaint to Maxis is that they should not have force people to buy new pack in order to become a member of Hotlink Youth Club after such a short promotion period. As a consequence of joining the club, I would need to carry two Hotlink lines.
A new SIM pack costs RM8.80. So it is still not too bad. I have read numerous bad encounters by other people from forums, i.e. long conversion process, being cheated by dealers, forced to reload RM10, etc. So I’m glad that I could be accepted into Hotlink Youth Club effortlessly without much trouble.
